On July 22, 2025, drummer Charles Goold led an exceptional quartet at Smalls Jazz Club, featuring vibraphonist Juan Diego Villalobos, pianist Davis Whitfield, and bassist Mark Lewandowski. This performance was part of Goold's ongoing exploration of Haitian rhythms and jazz fusion, following the release of his acclaimed debut album, Rhythm In Contrast, in February 2022. The ensemble's synergy was palpable, with Villalobos' melodic lines intertwining seamlessly with Whitfield's harmonic structures, while Lewandowski's bass provided a solid foundation for Goold's dynamic drumming. The set highlighted the quartet's ability to blend modern hard-bop with Afro-Caribbean influences, creating a rich and engaging musical experience.
