On August 2, 2022, alto saxophonist Mike DiRubbo led a dynamic quartet at Smalls, featuring trumpeter Josh Evans, bassist Paul Gill, and drummer Joe Farnsworth. This performance was part of a series of live recordings captured at Smalls, which were later released as the album Live at Smalls. The set showcased DiRubbo's commanding presence on the alto saxophone, delivering compositions that blend hard bop with post-Coltrane modal influences. The rhythm section, with Farnsworth's driving beats and Gill's steady basslines, provided a solid foundation, while Evans' trumpet added a vibrant counterpoint to DiRubbo's melodies.
