Miki Yamanaka

Friday, August 16, 2024

On August 16, 2024, pianist Miki Yamanaka graced The Jazz Gallery with a vibrant performance, unveiling a suite of original compositions inspired by colors. This concert was a precursor to her upcoming album, Chance, slated for release in October 2024. Recorded at the historic Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, Chance pays homage to jazz luminaries like pianist George Cables and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. (allaboutjazz.com)

The ensemble featured tenor saxophonist Anthony Orji, who had traveled from Iowa for this rare New York City appearance, bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa, and drummer Jimmy Macbride, Yamanaka's husband and frequent collaborator. Special guest Steve Nelson added depth with his vibraphone, complementing the color-themed compositions. This performance marked a significant collaboration, blending Yamanaka's original works with the seasoned expertise of her bandmates, setting the stage for the rich textures of Chance.
